Snues A. Voegelin grew up in Riehen, Switzerland and studied at the "Fachhochschule für Gestaltung" (College for arts and design), the former "Kunstgewerbeschule" in Basel. He has been a freelance artist since 1973 and looks back onto a variety of activities such as his work as stage designer for numerous theatre productions both at home and abroad. He was also active as an illustrator for various print media. However his main focus throughout all these years has been on painting. The latter was influenced and enriched by his residence in France, Germany and Canada.
Voegelin's interest in other artistic areas such as music, dance and literature has a strong impact on his work. Thus he has been engaged in the study of compositions, musicology as well as poetry since 1991. Some of his paintings for example are based on poems by Paul Celan or compositions by Rossini, Mozart, Strawinsky or Strauss. For the last eight years contemporary musicians such as the Riehen composer Jacques Wildberger, Freddie Mercury, Wolfgang Rihm, Luigi Dallapiccola, Luigi Nono or Helmut Lachenmann have been the main inspiration for his work.
